Situated atop a rocky outcrop the Buddha statue at Mihintale in Sri Lanka is huge and great fun to photograph.

Situated on a rocky outcrop, just 11 km north east of Anuradhapura the Mihintale site is of enormous spiritual significance to the Sinhalese as the place where Buddhism originated in Sri Lanka.

The route to the top follows a 1,500 year old paved road to a terrace, half way up the 311 meter hill. A climb up many, many steps follows.

Beautiful tourist attraction, worth to visit. Climbing to the top is doable. Make sure you keep to the rules: no bare legs and arms and no taking pictures with your back to Buddha (that's not respectful). Recommended!

The beautiful shrines, stupas, caves and above all the wondrous surrounding makes the places unforgettable ️. Mihintale is where the King Dhewanampiyatissa embraced Buddhism by Arahantha Mihindu while king was trying to hunt a deer ️ The Arahantha Mihindu and his companions came to Sri Lanka as a delegation sent by Arahantha Moggali Puththa Thissa with the patronage of great Emporer Asoka.

From the parking area got to take 50-60 meters to the stairs made with stone to the Mihintale rock? Climbing the rock after 10.30 am is very difficult as the black stone rocks get heated with the scorching Sun rays? There are many places to buy flowers and other items at the entrance area. Bring enough amount of water else you will get dehydrated. Also note, dress appropriately and no shorts are allowed.
There is an abundance of ancient stone architecture surrounding and other places where you can visit. As a result of introducing Buddhism the Sinhalese culture was nourished in many aspects such as architecture, painting, education, sculpture throughout the centuries. Also enjoy the scenic beauty once you are at the top ️
Mihintale, this is where the Buddhism was blossomed at Sri Lanka.
This is an amazing historical landmark, if you are planning for a trip to Anuradhapura/ Rajarata
Enjoyed my time at Mihintale…

This is a very sacred Buddha's statue in Mihinthalaya Rajamaha Vihara premises. It could be seen to all nearby places because it is located on a hill. This statue is very large and coloure in white. The premises is most peaceful. The Mihinthale Buddha's Statue has no long history it is newly built statue of Lord Buddha.

I'd recommend arriving around 4pm, 2 hours before sunset. That way you can walk around and see the ruins of the old monks' dining hall, nip over to the Black Pond (with some great photo monkey close-up opportunities on the way!), and see the Stupa and Buddha in daylight. You will also have time to walk down to Mahinda's Cave, where Mahinda, who first converted a Sri Lankan king to Buddhism used to retire to pray. It has a good view, I'm told, but I arrived too late to visit as the sun was setting. You get an amazing view from the rock anyway (but be aware that it is a bit of a hairy climb with hardly any well-defined steps, and at the top you have to use metal rails like a climbing frame). You can see for tens of miles around and as it was my first high-up view of Sri Lanka I loved it. From the Stupa you can actually see the giant white stupa in Anuradhapura and 5 lakes.

We ended up getting a guide because we were too slow to say no but we were glad we did because he did have interesting info (it is in the books but it was quite nice to have it narrated here) and pointed out good photo spots. Get an official guide from the table where you buy tickets, they seem more proper than private ones. Our guide even walked us back to town at the end of the day and showed the bus stop (note: last bus to Anuradhapura is at 7.15pm, and possibly 7.45pm)

Mihintale is a mountain peak near Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka.  It is believed by Sri Lankans to be the site of a meeting between the Buddhist monk Mahinda and King Devanampiyatissa which inaugurated the presence of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

Situated inside the world renowned Mihinthale Raja Maha Viharaya. Even this was built recently inside this historic ground, this has its own elegance too. Not many visitors specifically goes to this place as most of visitors and worshippers only come here to climb ancient Mihinthale rock.

Mihintale is a very special place for Buddhists in Sri Lanka. This is the place where Mahinda, son of the emperor Ashoka of India introduced Buddhism to this island. This happened more the 2300 years ago. The Maha Seya stupa is built on the top of the mountain, there is an ancient stairway going towards it.
