Sela Cetiya

This chaitya is of utmost importance to the Buddhist history of Sri Lanka and is classified under the slosmasthana (සොළොස්මස්ථාන) which are the top 11 Buddhist destinations in the country.

Sela chethiya is a Buddhist temple which is situated in Mihintale. “Urna Roma” (hair relic) of lord buddha is believed to be enshrined at this stupa. Sela chetiya is also sometimes known as “Ambasthala dageba”. It is believed to be the exact place where Mahinda Thero met King Devanampiyatissa and preached Buddhist on Poson poya day. It is a small stupa which is surrounded by stone pillars. The stupa is said to have been built by King Mahadatika Mahanaga during his reign from 9 AC to 21 AC.

Hundreds of steps to climb to reach this place. Lots of nice views can be catch up from this place.

This stupa is one of the sacred places that you can visit here. If you are photographer then you can get a nice view if you climb to the top of the Aradhana gala. Though it is not huge stupa it does pack historical values.

It is situated in Anuradhapura an ancient city in Srilanka.
Mihintala Raja Maha Vihara, it is the cradle of Buddhism in Srilanka.it is the abode of Arhant Mahinda and 3000 monks.
The stairway consists of 1840 wide steps.
The Uma Lome, the secret hair relic between the eye brows is said to be enshrined in Sela Cetiya.

Scholar argument is there originally stone pillars has carried a timber framed roof. This is one of the 16 main places (“Solosmasthana”) of Budhist worship.

අම්බස්තල දාගැබ - සේල චෛත්‍යය

මෙය කඳු මුදුනට ආසන්න වූ තැනිතලාවක පිහිටා ඇති අතර මාතලන්තිස්ස රජතුමා විසින් කරවන්නට ඇතැයි විශ්වාස කෙරේ. මිහිඳු මහ රහතන් වහන්සේ හා දේවානම්පියතිස්ස රජතුමා අතර අති වූ ‍‍එෙෙතිහාසික හමුවේ දේවානම්පියතිස්ස රජතුමා සිටින්නට ඇතැයි සැලකෙන ස්ථානය සිහි ගැන්වීමට මෙම දාගැබ ඉදිකර ඇත. මිහින්තලා පව්වෙහි ඇති මෙය කළු ගල් තලාවක් මත ගොඩනගා ඇති බැවින් මෙම නමින් ප්‍රකටව ඇත.

The place from where Buddhism spreader in Sri Lanka. A holy place for SL Buddhists. Worth visiting.

It’s a beautiful and small stupa. And this is the most important and religiously stupa in mihintale. But lots of people give their attention to the other huge stupa on top of the mountain. Historic and religious value is very much of this stupa. This spot believed to be the site of a meeting between mahinda thero and king devanampiyatissa.

Sela Chetiya is actually the stupa that's surrounded by rock pillars, not the stupa on top of the mountain. At the base of Sela Chetiya, there is a section done with "Chandrakanthi stone" which looks as if water is flowing through when the moonlight shines on it.

කුටකණ්ණතිස්ස රජතුමා: ක්‍රි. පූ. 41 - 91 - චේතියපබ්බතයෙහි තමා විසින්ම පිහිටුවන ලද මහා උපෝසථාගාරයක් ඉදිරිපිට සෙල්මුවා දාගැබක් කරවූ බව මහාවංශයේ: 34 වැනි පරිච්ඡේදයෙහි- කියැවෙයි. ඔහු එම භූමියේ බෝධියක් රෝපණය කරවූ බවද සඳහන් කර තිබේ. මිහින්තලේ වට දා ගෙය අසල ඉතා පැරැණියයි සැළකෙන බෝ වෘක්‍ෂයක් අදත් දක්නට ඇත. මෙය කුටකණ්ණතිස්ස රජු රෝපණය කරවූ බෝධියම යැයි කිව නොහැකි බව සැබෑව. එහෙත් එක් බෝ ගසක් මළ කල එතැන තවකක් සිටුවීම සිරිතකි. කෙසේ වෙතත් කුටකණ්ණතිස්ස රජු විසින් සිය ශෛලමය ස්තුපය ඉදි කරනු ලැබූ භූමියේ දාගැබටත් බෝධියටත් අමතරව විශාල උපෝසථාඝරයක් ද පිහිටි හෙයින් එය එතරම් කුඩා බිමක් විය නොහැකිය. වටදාගෙය අද පිහිටා තිබෙනු දක්නට ඇති තලවුව මේ අවශ්‍යතාවය සපුරාලයි. මිහින්තලේ මෙම භූමියේ ඇති වටදාගේ ඇතුළත ඇති දා ගැබ ඓතිහාසික ලියකියවිලිවලත් තුන්වැනි සියවසෙහි ශිලා ලේඛනයේත් සඳහන් සිලාචේතියම විය යුතු යැයි පිළිගත යුතු වේ.

පූජාවලිය සහ සද්ධර්මාලංකාරය වැනි සිංහල සාහිත්‍යය ග්‍රන්ථවලින් පැහැදිලි වන මහා වංශ විස්තරය අනුව මෙම ස්තුපය ඉදිකර ඇත්තේ බුදු රජාණන් වහන්සේ ලංකාවට වැඩ වදාළ තුන් වැනි අවස්ථාවේ මඳ වේලාවක් ධ්‍යානයට සමවැදී හුන් ස්ථානයේ ය. මේ අනුව මෙය බෞද්ධයන් ඉතා පූජනීය ලෙස සලකන සොළොස්මස්ථානයෙන් එකකි.

එය සනාථ කිරීම සඳහා මහා වංශයේ සඳහන් කරුණුත් කැණීම් වලින් මතු කරගත් සාධකත් ඒ බව සනාථ කරන හබරණ දිග ගල් සන්නසෙහි සඳහන්ව ඇති සටහන්ද මහාචාර්ය පරණවිතානයන් විමර්ශනය සඳහා පාදක කර ගෙන තිබේ. ඒ අනුසාරයෙන් අපට සිතාගත හැක්කේ මිහින්තලයේ ඇති අම්බස්ථල දාගැබද සේල චෛත්‍යයද එකක්ම බවයි.

ඓතිහාසික කරුණු අනුව අම්බස්ථල චෛත්‍ය පිහිටි ස්ථානය අනුබුදු මිහිඳු මහරහතන් වහන්සේට දේවානම්පියතිස්ස නරේන්ද්‍රයාණන් සම්මුඛ වූ ස්ථානය වශයෙන්ද හඳුන්වති.

එසේ නම් මෙම ස්ථානය මහා ආශ්චර්යවත් බවක් රැඳී පවිත්‍ර වූ ද අති පූජනීය වූ ද බිම්කඩක්ම ය. සම්බුදු දහමින් තුන්ලෝකයම ආලෝකවත් කළ අප ගෞතම බුදුපියාණන් වහන්සේගේත් ඒ සද්ධර්මයෙන් අප මාතෘභූමිය ආලෝකවත් කළ අනුබුදු මිහිඳු මහරහතන් වහන්සේගේත් පාදස්පර්ෂයෙන් පිවිතුරු වූ බිමෙක මේ සේල චෛත්‍යය ගොඩනැඟී තිබීම බෞද්ධයන් වූ අපට සුවිශේෂී වූ කාරණයකි.

This is a stupa (comparably small in size), found in the Mihinthale Temple premises. This place is believed to be the place the reverent Arahat Mahinda thero met King Devanampiyathissa.

Mihintale is a mountain peak near Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka. It is believed by Sri Lankans to be the site of a meeting between the Buddhist monk Mahinda and King Devanampiyatissa which inaugurated the presence of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. It is now a pilgrimage site, and the site of several religious monuments and abandoned structures
