National Maritime Museum - Galle reviews
14Exhibits of everything that the ocean “threw” ashore. A bit boring, it'll do for one time. At least something
By local standards it is very expensive, around $5. For that kind of money I’ll visit the Hermitage, which I couldn’t see in a day.
A must see place when you are in Galle Fort. One can understand the life of the fisherman and common folks.
This museum charges 50 for locals and 550 for foreigners. That's an insane markup, and I think travelers should band together to say no to being charged so much more than the place is willing to accept from locals. It's also a bad price. The museum itself is entirely forgettable, with a few dusty ship models and bones of one whale. Better to enjoy the free galleries in Galle. Don't support places that try to take advantage of foreigners.
I love this place, this a one of the best places we selected for our guiding hike.there were a lot of information about maritime industry.there were amazing structures and sculptures.highly recommended.
A very educational place. Anyone can learn about the sea. Not too much crowded since some do not go to see it. I guess we need 2,3 hours to see this whole place. Very good
This museum exhibiting ancient underwater artefacts retrieved from around Galle and it's suberb ocean, ship models and other marine exhibits is located in a 17th century warehouse building inside the World Heritage site Old Dutch Fort in Galle, Sri Lanka.
This well-preserved warehouse building is perceived to be built in 1671.
Good place to study the history behind the Galle city, Well kept & organized. And there's a Whale skeleton hanging from the roof across the museum.
If you need to doge rain or you really have nothing better to do, its OK - but the exhibits are sparse, uninteresting, dusty and badly labelled (in English anyway). The majority have no obvious link to Galle or Sri Lanka. It really teaches nothing about Sri Lanka's maritime history. Presumably Galle is a city with no academics or none that care.shame e, because the apace has so much potential. The few staff we saw were inhabiting an archaeological dungeon of filing cabinets, not open to visitors but possibly more interesting than the elreat of the museum. Spend the $5 on a beer that you'll find more inspiring.
Dutch warehouse building considered as longest building during the Dutch era and good place to have understanding of maritime activities of galle Harbour.
Not much to see here. Very dark and humid inside.there is few interesting things but overall it feels empty.
Big, informative museum with so much history related to Sri Lankan marine life.
The museum is well maintained but the staff aren't very helpful.
It also charges 5 times more for foreigners (Rs1000+) compared to locals and it's cash only.
This is also the same story as the other general museum in the fort, comparatively a good collection of items, with poor customer service. The large indoor area could be put with more artefacts. I’m not sure if it is only for Dutch-Galle related maritime items, or a collection of random historical items around the country. If it’s the second, I think there could be more interesting items which can come under its roof, and making this place more colourful.
