Another lovely Geoffrey Bawa designed home. You can easily see his signature in the many cleverly planned out details - the typical Bawa courtyards, the wonderful cross ventilation, the light fixtures, pillars, beautiful windows, doors and mustard coloured walls. Manager Ananda kindly gave us a tour of the property and explained the history of the place - once known as the Jacobsen house.
The property is surrounded by trees, which gives a feeling of exclusivity, yet it is only a few steps away from the beach. The location is on the very secluded East end of Mawella beach. There are other small resorts further up the beach, but their guests hardly ever venture past the Last House.
Staff work as a great team and do their best to make you feel at home.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are prepared by a well trained, creative private chef and served by ever smiley and friendly Amith. Food is very good, but note there is no liquor licence, but you are welcome to bring your own alcohol.
A big attraction along the beach are the many fishing boats and the daily colourful activity that goes with it.

I have stayed at The Last House everytime I visited Sri Lanka since 1998 - the perfect haven/oasis for kicking back. An inspirational legacy of the late Geoffrey Bawa - and beyond. Protected from high rises while being the first beach off the road from Colombo which helps it stay pristine. Possibly with the best kitchen/menu i have come across. Here's hoping tourism can help rebalance Sri Lanka's troubles. Hope to be back before the end of the year.

The Last House is located directly on a secluded, dreamlike beach near Tangalle. The hotel is not easy to find and is not marked as a hotel - this is so that privacy is fully guaranteed, which the hotel certainly succeeds in doing.

The rooms are very spacious and chicly furnished. It is important to know that there is no air conditioning in the rooms. However, as the rooms are very well ventilated, this is not a problem - it is even good to sleep without this artificial air.

There is a beautiful beach directly in front of the hotel. Since there are no other hotels nearby, it is a private beach)

The staff is very obliging and friendly. A high level of service is provided. Bravo!

Fine delicacies can be consumed in the hotel restaurant at lunch and in the evening. For dinner, the Coco Tangalla is also highly recommended. This restaurant belongs to the same hotel group and can be easily reached by tuck-tuck.

The breakfast is excellent. From a menu, dishes can be selected à la carte.

We enjoyed our stay and the peace and quiet at the Last House very much and can only recommend the hotel. For larger groups, the whole hotel can also be rented exclusively.

We stayed for two nights in the Moonamal room. This room is on first floor, facing the garden and the ocean. We can hear the waves from the room.
It has a private outdoor bath and shower. We took our shower every day outside. It’s an amazing experience with the birds singing around you. (There’s also a regular shower in the bathroom)

We can walk a good mile on the beach. It’s very quiet, the sand is beautiful. There are only a few fishermen boats. We were often the only one on the whole beach.

It’s possible to swim in the ocean in the morning. If you walk ten minutes on the right side of the beach, the waves are smaller and you can enjoy the ocean.

The hotel provides for free little board to enjoy the waves.

The pool is 5 feet deep. Large enough to swim. The water is very warm.

We ate at the restaurant of the hotel. No buffet, a la carte only. Everything was delicious. Breakfast is included (traditional breakfast or sri lankan breakfast).
There are many choices for lunch. You have to try the tuna salad!
Dinner is a set up menu. They will ask you before if you have any intolerance/allergies or special requirements. The food was very good and the service was very professional.

I hope to have the opportunity to come back to this lovely boutique hotel.

Pretty expensive but if you can afford it it's worth to spend some days here. One of the best hotel by the legendary architet
