Nagapooshani Amman Temple, Nainativu, Jaffna, Sri Lanka
Nagapooshani Amman Temple located on the ancient Nainativu island near Jaffna in North Sri Lanka is one of the two Shaktipeeth temples in Sri Lanka. Other one is in Trincomalee. It is believed Devi's anklets fell here. For this temple, you need to drive for an hour or so from Jaffna on narrow roads that give you the impression of driving on water & then take a ferry to the island. The temple can be seen from a distance as it's fairly tall gopuram announces its presence. Gopuram is flanked by two giant elephant sculptures. Inside the huge temple complex has Naga figures all around. It is believed that Indra did his sadhna here after Gautam Rishi caught him with Ahalya. He made 1000 yoni signs on his body which the Devi in the form of Bhuvaneshwari here converted into hia 1000 eyes. You see lot of small wooden swings on the trees here. The temple is very popular & the ferry boat is full of devotees visiting the temple. I visited on a Friday & got to see the Palki procession of the Devi. - Nagapooshani Amma

One of the most iconic religious places in northern province. However, what I found most fascinating is their "Dansela", where they provide free food to all the visitors. They feed everyone with a tasty vegetarian meal.

A Hindu temple with a great history. Off the coast of Jaffna peninsula lies the island of Nainativu and the temple is on it. Could reach the temple by boat roughly in about 30 minutes. Not many worshipers during the day time.

One of the most popular temple in north Sri Lanka. You must get a boat service to reach the island. Mid day pooja starts at 12pm. Everyday free lunch is given here. The climate is usually very hot. The sand around the temple is hot and it's difficult to walk around with barefoot, remember no footwear is allowed to use in the surrounding area of the temple.

A colourful big temple. You take boat from Kurikadduwan and it costs SIR. 40 on way. If you are going there in late afternoon and have to return to Jaffna, please check last boat returning time from Nainativu to Kurikadduwan. More important, also check last bus departure time from Kurikadduwan to Jaffna, unless you have your own transport. It is important otherwise you may get stuck there.

It's a cool place to have a divine experience in a small island. It's a short travel from jaffna, you have to take a bus (45 mins travel) to reach the ferry and you'll reach naina-theevu in 15mins travel through boat (ferry). There is a Hindu temple and also a Buddha temple in the parallel road. Don't forget to carry a cap and a water bottle. Try parathas opposite to the Hindu temple, it tasted good along with a cup of milk tea. Travel light and enjoy:)

Best Time to VisitThe annual 16-day Mahostavam (Thiruvizha) festival celebrated in July attracts thousands of pilgrims who come to perform rituals at the Nagapooshani Amman Temple. Worldwide Hindu festivals, such as Navrati (end of September - October) and Shivrati (end of February - beginning of March), also attract many devotees and visitors from within the country and from across the sea.

15 priests perform rituals in the temple on a daily basis and for specific festive occasions. There are 6 pooja (rituals) held every day: sacred bath, decoration, food offering, and waving of lamps, all accompanied by musical instruments, around the giant mandala (circular pattern) in the center of the temple.

Must visit when in Nainativu. The attention to detail of this Kovil's construction is impressive. The Kovil is also right next to the Nainativu jetty.

Nainativu Nagapooshani Amman Temple [Tamil:  நயினாதீவு நாகபூசணி அம்மன் கோயில்,  romanized:  Nayiṉātīvu Nākapūcaṇi Am'maṉ Kōyil - Meaning: Nainativu (island/city of the temple) ; Nagapooshani (The Goddess who wears snakes as jewellery) ; Amman (Goddess) ] is an ancient and historic Hindu temple located amidst the Palk Strait on the island of Nainativu,  Sri Lanka. It is dedicated to Parvati who is known as Nagapooshani or Bhuvaneswari and her consort,  Shiva who is named here as Nayinaar. The temple's fame is accredited to Adi Shankaracharya, a 9th-century Hindu philosopher, for identifying it as one of the prominent 64 Shakti Peethams in Shakti Peetha Stotram and its mention in the Brahmanda Purana. The temple complex houses four gopurams  (gateway towers) ranging from 20–25 feet in height, to the tallest being the eastern Raja Raja Gopuram soaring at 108 feet high. The temple is a significant symbol for the Tamil people, and has been mentioned since antiquity in Tamil literature, such as Manimekalai and Kundalakesi. The present structure was built during 1720 to 1790 after the ancient structure was destroyed by the Portuguese in 1620. The temple attracts around 1000 visitors a day, and approximately 5000 visitors during festivals. The annual 16-day Mahostavam (Thiruvizha)  festival celebrated during the Tamil month of Aani  (June/July) - attracts over 100,000 pilgrims. There is an estimated 10,000 sculptures in this newly renovated temple.
