After years of restoration efforts and international support, the library was reopened in 2003. The reconstructed building retained its historic essence while incorporating modern facilities. The reopening marked a crucial step toward the revival of education and intellectual pursuits in the region.

Well sadly this was partially closed when we arrived. But that's the luck of the day! This is a really extraordinary building but the history is very sad. It is so because the burning of the Jaffna Public Library (took place on the night of June 1,1981, when an organized mob of Sinhalese individuals went on a rampage, burning the library. It is regarded as one of the most violent examples of ethnic biblioclasm of the 20th century. According t my research at the time of its destruction, the library was one of the biggest in Asia, containing over 97,000 books and manuscripts. What a terrible tragedy for Sri Lanka and the world. But the building is wonderful and beautifully preserved.

The library welcomes visitors in the early evening until its closure at 6 PM. A mark of respect to the culture it represents, visitors are required to remove their footwear before entering. While some sections remain inaccessible, the library's public areas and its beautifully adorned garden invite exploration.

In essence, the Jaffna Library is more than a physical structure; it is a custodian of heritage, knowledge, and the unyielding spirit of resilience. Like a phoenix risen from its ashes, this library is almost back to its old glory, and is recovering from the harrowing incident in 1981. Parking is available, and common visitors are allowed to read newspapers in the periodical section. Only members are allowed to roam the halls of bookshelves, like most libraries.

Known as Asia's biggest library, here we have public reading section, Public studying hall, library members studying hall and reading sections. Here we have kids studying section separately and conference hall where we can conduct public events and IELTS exam in the same hall. A canteen also took place in the library premises near the back entrance. Which also have an attractive natural surroundings with a big parking area and wheelchair access also available here.

யாழ் நூலகத்தின் உருவாக்கத்திற்கு மூல காரணமாக இருந்தவர் அச்சுவேலியைச் சேர்ந்த கே. எம். செல்லப்பா. இவர் யாழ்ப்பாண நீதிமன்றத்தில் காரியதரிசியாக பணிபுரிந்தவர். 1933 ஆம் ஆண்டில் அவர் தனது வீட்டிலேயே தன்னிடம் இருந்த சில நூல்களை வைத்து நூல்நிலையம் ஆரம்பித்து வைத்து, சான்றோர்களுக்கும், மாணவர்களுக்கும் புதிய திறவுகோலை வழங்கினார் எனலாம்.

இந்த நூலகம் பலருக்கும் பயன்பட வேண்டும் என்று எண்ணி, 09/06/1934 அன்று யாழ்ப்பாணம் மத்திய கல்லூரி மண்டபத்தில் ஜசாப் தம்பையா அவர்களின் தலைமையில் கூட்டம் வைத்தார்கள். அன்று நூலகத்திற்கென சேர்த்த காசு மொத்தம் 182.22ரூ/- மட்டுமே. அன்றைய காலகட்டத்தில் இந்தக்காசு பெரும் மூலதனமாக அமைந்துள்ளது. ஆசுப்பத்திரி வீதியில் ஒரு வாடகை அறையில், 01/08/1934 அன்று, 844 நூல்கள் மற்றும் 36 பருவ வெளியீடுகளுடன் அடுத்தகட்ட வளர்ச்சிக்கு நூலகம் தயாராகிற்று.

அடிப்படை வசதிகளின்றி நூலகம் இடர்பட்டுக்கொண்டிந்த வேளையில், யாழ்ப்பாணப் கட்டிட சபை பொறுப்பேற்று 1935 இல் இடமாற்றம் செய்தது. 1952 ஆம் ஆண்டு, ஆனி 14ஆம் நாள் சாமி சபாபதி தலைமையில் நடைபெற்ற மாநாட்டினை அடுத்து நவீன கட்டிடம் அமைக்க ஆரம்பித்தனர். புதிய நூலகக் கட்டிடத்தை கட்டியெழுப்புவதற்கு அதிவனபிதா லாங் அவர்கள் பக்கத்துணையாக இருந்து ஆதரவு அளித்துவந்தார். நூலகத்துறையில் நிபணத்துவம் வாய்ந்த கலாநிதி எஸ் ஆர் ரங்கநாதன் ஆதரவு கொடுத்தார். சென்னை மாகாண அரசின் கட்டிடக்கலை நிபுனர் கே. எஸ். நரசிம்மன் அவர்கள், நூலகத்தின் வடிவமைப்பிற்கான திட்டங்களை வகுத்து, வரைபடங்களை தயாரித்துக் கொடுத்தார்.

29-03-1953 அன்று கட்டிட அடிக்கல் நாட்டுவிழா இடம்பெற்றது. 1959 ஆம் ஆண்டில் முதல்கட்டம் பூர்த்தி செய்யப்பட்டு, அப்போது யாழ் முதல்வராக இருந்த ஆல்பிரட் துரையப்பா அவர்களால் பெரும் விமர்சையாக திறக்கப்பட்டது.  முழுமை பெற்று இயங்கிவந்த நூலகத்தில் அன்று 33 நூலகர்கள் பணிபுரிந்தனர்.

யாழ் நூலக எரிப்பு

பல கட்டங்களைத் தாண்டி, படிப்படியாக உருவெடுத்து பெரும்புகழ் பெற்ற அறிவுக் களஞ்சியம் என யாழ் நூலகம் திகழ்ந்துவந்தது. அத்தகைய பெருமைகளையும் சிறப்பையும் இல்லாதொழிக்க, தீக்கிரையாக்கி பொசுக்கிய நாளாக, தமிழரின் வரலாற்றில் மறக்கமுடியாத நாளாக, மே மாதம் 31ஆம் நாள் துயர் மிகு வரலாற்று பக்கங்களில் இடம்பெற்றது; அன்றைய சம்பவம் தமிழ் மக்களின் விடுதலைப் போராட்டத்தை அடுத்த பரிமாணத்திற்கு கொண்டு செல்ல ஒரு முக்கிய கரணியமாயிற்று என்றும் கூறலாம். தமிழ்மக்களிடையே உறுதியடைந்து வந்த தமிழ்த் தேசிய நிலைப்பாடு, பௌத்த சிங்கள இனவாதிகளுக்கு மிகவும் வெறுப்பூட்டியது- அதுவே தமிழ் மக்கள் மீதும் தமிழ் மக்களின் அடையாளங்கள் மீதும் வன்முறைகளைக் கட்டவிழ்த்து அவர்களது உடைமைகளை சூரையாடத் தூண்டிவிட்டது. அந்த வகையில், தமிழ் மக்களின் வரலாற்றை அழித்தால் தமிழினத்திற்கென்றே அடையாளம் இல்லாமல் போய்விடும் எனச் சதித்திட்டம் தீட்டிய இனவாத அரசு தமிழ் மக்களின் கருவூலமான யாழ்நூலகத்தை சாம்பலாக்கினர்.

1981 மே 31 ஆம் திகதி நள்ளிரவு சுமார் 12: 00 மணிக்குப் பின்னர் தீமூட்டப்பட்ட யாழ்நூலகம் இரவிரவாக எரிந்தது. கட்டிடத்தோடு, 1800களில் இருந்து யாழில் வெளியாகிய செய்தி ஏடுகள், தொன்மை வாய்ந்த வரலாற்று ஆவணங்களுடன், எம்மவரின் எழுத்துருவாய் திகழ்ந்த நூலகத்தில் சுமார் 97,000 த்திற்கும் மேற்பட்ட, கிடைப்பதற்கு அரிய பல தமிழ், ஆங்கில நூல்களும், பல ஓலைச்சுவடுகளும் உருகுலைந்து சாம்பலாகின.

தீக்கிரையாகிய பலவற்றில், இலக்கியம், இலக்கணம், தத்துவம், மொழியியல் பிரிவுகளின் கீழ் 6000 நுல்களும், 1585 இல் கத்தோலிக்க மதத்தலைவர்களால் தமிழில் எழுதப்பட்ட பல நூல்களும் இதில் அடங்கும். அரிய புத்தகங்களுள் 1660 இல் றோபேட் நொக்ச் (Robert Knox) அவர்களால் எழுதப்பட்ட “கிசுட்டரி ஆப் சிலோன்” (History of Ceylon), யாழ்ப்பாண வரலாற்று நூலாகிய முதலியார் நாயகத்தின் “பண்டைய யாழ்ப்பாணம்”, தமிழில் முதல்முதல் வெளிவந்த முத்துத்தம்பிப்பிள்ளையின் இலக்கிய கலைக் களஞ்சியமான “அபிதான கோசம்”, அதன் பின்னர் வந்த சிங்கார முதலியாரால் தொகுக்கப்பட்ட கலைக்களஞ்சியமான “அபிதான சிந்தாமணி” சித்த வைத்தியம் கூறும் பனை ஓலைகளில் எழுதப்பட்ட ஓலைச்சுவடுகள் அனைத்தும் அழிக்கப்பட்டது.

இச்சம்பவம், இலங்கை பேரினவாதத்தின் மீதிருந்த இறுதி நம்பிக்கையையும் சிதைத்து, தமிழ் மக்களின் போராட்டத்திற்கு விதையானது.

The Jaffna Public Library is located around 2km from Jaffna town. It is is one of the city’s major attractions. This has long been a symbol of northern heritage emphasized by its classical architecture. It was designed and built in 1933 by engineer Vaithiyalingam. This library was once one of the largest in Asia, having contained over 97,000 books and manuscripts back in the early 80s. The library also endured a horrific burning in 1981. This library is still an architecturally significant structure, surrounded by gardens. The library is open every day, but visiting hours are only on weekdays from 4: 30 pm to 6: 30 pm. No entrance fees is required to visit this library. Anyone can visit this library. Very nice place to visit and I would love to recommend this library.

The library has different kind of books which are useful in learning. Library has got updated with new books also.

Once considered the largest library in Asia. Contained a wealth of knowledge which helped many scholars and experts from Jaffna to excel in their fields and serve the country. Declared open first in 1954 by then Mayor Durayappah and later destroyed by arson in 1981 by illiterate and shortsighted extremists. A key tourist attraction in Jaffna. But only open to visitors after 4pm (we visited at 5pm but couldn't enter in). A place to visit and reflect upon the damage and adversities caused by war and disputes. Also the importance of peace and understanding of each other for development.

A must visit place. If you are looking for a peaceful place to study then it's here. No sort of disturbances. I loved it. Very polite and helpful staffs.

Coming from Toronto, Canada I’ve always wanted to see this amazing library! I was very happy to see it first hand! The gentlemen working as security was very polite and gave us knowledge onto the history of the Jaffna Library. Very happy it is existing today and will definitely come back! Thank you!
