A versatile experience. The condition of the path changes from tar roads to narrow escapes, great slopes to very slippery muddy paths and etc. It seemed like there were several routes to reach the top and each route was different in the degree of difficulty. However the more difficult, the merrier at the end.
Because of the complexity of the routes, it is always better to have an expert who's familiar with Hanthana.

Easy reachable by bus. Take Number 655 to Uwalawa (Stop at the 4th Mile Junction), departs every 45min at the Clock Tower Bus terminal in Kandy.
You need to pay 50Rs (don't know why, as the trail is not maintained at all).
First part is super steep, slippery as hell and kind of dangerous on the way back down.
When you reach the communicationtowers it's another 10min or less to the best viewpoint. In total not even one hour to reach the top. The weather is super unpredictable up there so I waited around 2hrs at the top until it finally cleared up for some minutes. The views are insane and I wish I could have witnessed it on a sunny day.
I can highly recommend this short hike but be well prepared with good hiking boots, rainjacket and maybe even rainpants as the grass is hip-high in some parts and will make you all wet.

We met with leeches, and in the dark we could not find the path. Wear sneakers and pants. Leeches are disgusting

Took me an hour to get to the cliff, was it worth it to go through the ordeal? Indeed it is, if it wasn't I wouldn't have taken the risk but there's still more to go and discover, also if anybody knows an ideal place for camping, let me know.

Hanthana hiking is the best hike in Kandy and is highly recommended for both experienced and beginner hikers. Located in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, south-west of Kandy, the Hanthana Mountain Range is a protected area known for its natural beauty.

University of Peradeniya is situated adjacent to the Hanthana mountain range. The range is home to seven peaks, with the highest point reaching 1,200 meters. The vistas along the trail are incredibly beautiful, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes. If camping is your thing, there are camping spots available on the trail.

The hike can be completed in around 5-6 hours, and the path is clear and well-defined. While the initial climb may be a bit challenging, the effort is worth it. Once you reach the top, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the lush green island on a clear day.

You can reach Hanthana Mountain by public bus or any other mode of transportation. However, do keep in mind that there can be a significant presence of leeches, so it's important to be cautious and prepared. The misty conditions in the area should also be taken into consideration.

Let's all do our part in keeping the trail clean. Remember to take back whatever you bring with you and leave no trace. By preserving the natural beauty of Hanthana, we ensure its enjoyment for future generations.

Hanthana Mountain, located in the upcountry of Sri Lanka, is a popular hiking destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. The mountain range stands at an elevation of 3800 feet, and offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys.

The hike up Hanthana Mountain is a challenging but rewarding experience. The trail takes you through dense forests, tea plantations, and rocky terrain, offering a diverse range of landscapes to explore. The ascent takes about 3-4 hours, depending on your fitness level and the route you choose.

The starting point of the hike is the Hanthana Mountain Range Conservation Forest, located about 5 km from the city of Kandy. The forest is home to a variety of flora and fauna, including endemic species such as the Hanthana Birdwing butterfly and the Hanthana Tree Frog. As you make your way up the mountain, you will encounter streams and waterfalls that are perfect for a refreshing break.

One of the highlights of the hike is the Hanthana Peak, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the city of Kandy. At the top, you can relax and take in the views while enjoying a packed lunch or a hot cup of tea.

It is recommended to start the hike early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and ensure that you have enough time to complete the hike before sunset. It is also important to wear appropriate hiking gear, carry plenty of water and snacks, and follow the marked trail to ensure your safety.

Overall, a hike up Hanthana Mountain is a must-do experience for anyone visiting Sri Lanka who enjoys hiking, nature and outdoor adventure.

This has breathtaking view from up. Actually early morning walk is good. It is popular tourism places in kandy area. If you climb 4 km in the mountain you can find tower area. It has lost of transmission towers, like sirasa, derana, dialog and slt etc. If you would compare from Peradeniya end this is easier for both climbing and returning

Safe and peaceful hiking spot. Can experience a walk through cold tea fields and a nice viewpoint of Kandy. Start as early as 7 a.m.

Do bring adequate amounts of water and make sure to wear proper feet protection/boots if you intend to complete the hike, as there is a small section of jungle in the middle of the journey with lots of slippery rocks and tons of leeches!

The Hanthana Mountain Range lies in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, south-west of Kandy. It was declared as an environmental protection area in February 2010 under the National Environment Act. The maximum height of the range is 1,200 m (3,800 ft). The mountain range consists of seven peaks. The highest one being the Uura Kanda. The range is a favourite destination among the mountain hikers in Sri Lanka. University of Peradeniya is situated adjacent to the Hanthana mountain range.

It was great as always! Going to Hanthana since I was a school kid and counting. There was No clear treck due to heavy rain. Bring long sleeves, long legged, shoes to cover up and avoid leeches! Keep 1L of water will be better. If using public transportation be back before 5pm. Can find a tuk for a about Rs. 700 to Kandy Railway Station.

The gate is open until 4pm (to go in) If you wanting to cover-up whole mountains range have to be there early morning.

Best hike in Kandy. Don't stop at the first peak as most does but do continue on the beaten path for other peaks too to get the most of the hike and to have a unforgettable experience. Can complete the whole mountain range in one go. Very beautiful vistas to see. Camping places available on the trail too if that's your thing. Highly recommended to beginner hikers too. As long as you stay on the beaten path there's no real danger but will recommend a more experienced hiker for safety.

It is one of the best hikes in Kandy. There are multiple peaks that you can hike to from one to the other. Watch out for leeches!

If you're in Kandy and like hiking you have to come here. It's only 20 mins drive from the city and I managed to get 3 peaks done before the end of the afternoon so thoroughly exhausted but well happy!

I wish I could have stayed longer as I would have loved to complete all the peaks.

No need to rush to Ella. Here are tea fields as well and lovely small villages. You can have some snacks before the hiking road starts. Nearby is a beautiful temple.

To have a good hike at kandy thus place is a better choice. Its a hike like 3 km and through a small forest. When u reach the top ou get a scenic view also you can walk like more than 5km over the mountain and then get down by another village. You can also camp here but the only issue is carrying all what you need.

This is the best thing you can do on a weekend. The path is clear. It takes only 4 hours to cover the hanthana mountain on foot. First it is little bit hard to climb up. But the path is clear. Once u reach the top you can see miles of green island on a clear day.
