Knuckles Mountain Range, also known as the Knuckles 5 Peaks, is a magnificent geological formation located in the central part of Sri Lanka. As one of the country's most enchanting natural treasures, it is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcasing its rich biodiversity, stunning landscapes, and cultural significance.

The Knuckles Mountain Range derives its name from its resemblance to the knuckles of a clenched fist when viewed from a distance. Spanning over 155 square kilometers, this mountainous region is characterized by rugged terrains, mist-covered peaks, cascading waterfalls, and deep valleys. It is renowned for its five prominent peaks, which add to the rugged beauty and allure of the area.

1. Knuckles East Peak: Rising to an elevation of approximately 1,872 meters, the Knuckles East Peak offers breathtaking panoramic views and is a popular destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Its lush greenery, diverse flora, and occasional sightings of elusive wildlife make it a haven for ecological exploration.

2. Knuckles West Peak: Standing tall at 1,883 meters, the Knuckles West Peak is another prominent peak in the range. It boasts a remarkable landscape, characterized by deep valleys, picturesque tea plantations, and scattered patches of dense forests. Trekking to the top of this peak rewards visitors with awe-inspiring vistas of the surrounding countryside.

3. Knuckles Central Peak: At an elevation of 1,910 meters, the Knuckles Central Peak is the highest point in the entire range. The ascent to this peak requires some determination and physical stamina, but the splendid vistas of mountain ranges, valleys, and waterfalls make it all worthwhile.

4. Mini World's End: Mini World's End is a captivating cliff edge situated at around 1,200 meters above sea level. It offers breathtaking views of the Knuckles Mountain Range and the verdant valleys below. Visitors can enjoy the ethereal beauty of sunrise and sunset from this vantage point.

5. Duwili Falls: Nestled within the Knuckles Mountain Range, Duwili Falls is a cascading waterfall that adds to the charm of the region. Knuckles range also called Dumbara mountain range is located off Kandy, in the northern end of Central Highlands of of Sri Lanka.
To the south and east of the mountain range is Mahaweli river basin while to the west are Matale plains.
Access to Knuckles Range
The trekkers’ favorite approach to Knuckles ranges begins on A26 main motor way running east of Kandy to Hunnsgiriya. At Hunnasiriya, B grade road leads to the Corbett’s Gap which opens up magnificent views of Knuckles range. From Corbett’s Gap the road that leads to the village of Meemure too can be travelled by a vehicle having good ground clearance.
The trekkers also have options in two more entry roads: from Matale via Rattota and Riversten; from Wattegama via Panwila. The rugged peaks of the Knuckles (Dumbara Hills) named by the British for their resemblance to the knuckles of a clenched fist. The steeply shelving mountain terrain reaches 1863 m the summit of the main Knuckles peak itself (the sixth highest in Sri Lanka) and included stand of rare dwarf cloud forest.
Trekking at Knuckles Range
The Knuckles range is one of the loveliest nature attractions of Sri Lanka. The changing terrain of grasslands, rugged mountain peaks interspersed with streams and cascading waterfalls make Knuckles mountain range that covers an area of 18512 hectares the trekker’s paradise.
Knuckles mountain range, a World heritage Conservation Area that affords intriguing trekking possibilities, is still to a greater extent untouched zone of significant natural beauty and biodiversity. The serious trekkers and biodiversity enthusiasts would even take up a three day hike of 40 plus km trek with a guide.

The Knuckles Mountain Range is considered one of the toughest hiking trails in the country and is best attempted by those with prior experience in hiking. That being said, no matter how experienced you are, it’s mandatory to have a guide. Besides the area’s vastness and the possibility of getting lost, hikers are only allowed to enter the protected reserve with a qualified guide. Failure to do so will land you in trouble with the authorities.

While this hiker’s paradise features as many as 34 trails, finding information on most of them can be difficult. It’s always best to ask your hotel or guide for suggestions. Be sure to let them know what you expect to see; some trails meander through rural villages while others go past waterfalls and lush vegetation.

Amazing place covered with mist all the time. Felt like live in an English country. Best hiking area in Sri Lanka. It is 40km away from the city Kandy. There are 5 peaks. We could not hike all of them. Because you need atleast 3 days. Now I put this montain in my best list.visitar ese lugar una vez más en mi vida es mi esperanza. Porque eso se llevó mi corazón

The experience was greater than I thought because we camped in the outermost parts of knuckles conservatory forest. The wind is great, the view is superb in the morning and if you’re a nature lover you’ll definitely love this experience.

Great service. From pick up at the hotel early morning to driving to trekking destination. The walk through the nature is more than fantastic. We saw lovely animals like monkeys thanks to our great guide Dishins. We wanted to spend a few days in hidden nature of Sri Lanka and we got much more than we expected: swimming in waterfall, BBQ at night, lovely food, great company. Highly recommended.

Beautiful place, maintained by the Sri Lanka Trekking company. We stayed there (3) for one night and enjoyed a great view, good facilities, kind staff and good food (breakfast and dinner).
