Blue Corals Guesthouse and Restaurant reviews
21 We spontaneously looked for something to eat and were extremely pleasantly surprised! Everything was very, very good and right on the water with a beautiful view of the sea and the beach! The food was extremely tasty, the portion was large enough and there was even some salad with it (we haven't had anything else in 2 weeks in Sri Lanka). And the family is extremely hospitable and offered us a room with them because we weren't happy with our hostel (Rope Hostel, not recommended!).
If we are ever in the area again we will definitely come back! Thank you for everything!
Such a beautiful place with super delicious, homemade food! Can highly recommend the currys and the Kottu (basically everything we tried)
Honestly the best meal I’ve had in Sri Lanka. What a little gem this place is! Thank you so much!
Lovely family, local food. We had an incredible cashew nut curry and vegetarian Kothu which my boyfriend liked so much he made me go back for breakfast the day we left so he could have it one more time! We also made a spontaneous decision to go snorkelling with the owner to see sea turtles which we saw and they were such an amazing sight. So nice to see something so incredible in somewhere with zero tourists/ other people looking to achieve the same thing!
This place is a gem. Came here for lunch a lot, the food is some of the best I had in Sri Lanka and the people who own this place are amazing. Worth eating here if you’re looking for some excellent rice and curry.
What a beautiful location right on the beach and such a friendly family. We have enjoyed great food at really great prices and one evening we even saw baby turtles come out of the sand and make the journey to the sea
Definitely worth dropping in to eat and stroll along this deserted stretch of idyllic beach
This place is a picture of paradise. They have 3 rooms with AC and hot water that are directly on the beach, the food is very good and the owner, Sara, is incredibly nice and takes good care of you. There are often turtles that come on the beach to lay eggs at night. I strongly recommend you try this slice of paradise.:)
One of the best vegetable curries we've had in Sri Lanka! Thank you so much for your hospitality!
We had such an incredible night here, from entering to be greeted by adorable little puppy, to meeting and chatting with the owners, not to mention how they personally relocate turtle eggs so that the local dogs don't eat them or how rising tides and massive beach resorts have left the local coast line thin. The cashew curry was the bomb dot com, absolutely delish.
This will be a memory of Sri Lanka I'll probably never forget! Cheers
We ate the vegetable and prawn curry here. I eat a lot of curry, and I have to say - This. Was. The. Best. Curry. I. Have. Ever. Eaten. So so so delicious.
So.first of all,
I think that Nishanta is a really nice & smiley person but there’s a few things that didn’t worked at all.
The bathroom was not clean at our venue.
We said that to her and she clean it right after. No garbage, no soap. Not so dramatic.
After we entered in our room, we received no informations from her.
It means, after a quick drink outside, we arrived at 23: 45 at the guesthouse and the gate was closed.
Tried to call, no answer.
I had to climb over to open it.
She said that the gate is always closed at 10: 00 what she didn’t mentioned us.
The breakfast cames with some ants that we tried to remove but we had to change it.
And finally we asked for a cheap tuktuk to our next location and find a way much cheaper tuktuk 200meter away from that place. So it’s really rare that we had so many points in just one night stand.
I think there’s a few thing that you guys have to look for.
Sad because the workers were kind, the place is quite and have a nice beach.
This family has been in business for many years and really know how to take care of their guests. The rooms are incredibly well kept and in great condition. Two houses, one literally on the beach, and the other across the road for more affordable options. Both are great! Their restaurant is on the beach as well and I will say, some of the best local food you can have in this area! The Sri Lankan breakfast was incredible, and to eat it next to the ocean made it even more memorable. Definitely make this place the spot if you head to madiha to escape the crowds of Mirissa and Weligama.
We just came for a beer and some light food and got served the most amazing vegetable rotti she made on request!
Cozy spot right on the beach and a friendly staff.
Definitely coming back next time we’re in the area
I have been a guest every Winter for the past 6 years so this speaks for itself. I have watched as this lovely family take time and effort to transform this beautiful sleepy beach location from 3 rustic a basic rooms on the beach into something rather special. Which now includes their family home on the other side of the road. Before I tell you more I must address the review by MICHAEL KOTHS which is so totally incorrect! Saranga and Nishantha have looked after the turtles coming to their beach for the past 20 years. They are hugely knowledgable about them and monitor every nests laid on their beach. I have seen Saranga cry on discovering a nest raided by local fishermen who still believe the eggs have a magical health giving component. This person Michael Koths completely misunderstood what was happening. Saranga watches over every nest and has the approximate hatch day in her diary of every one. She disguises the nests and dissuades tourists from sitting on top by placing her tables over them as the sand gets compacted and they get squashed and can’t form properly. When they are due to hatch she checks the beach every morning. When they do hatch she is on hand and will ask guest to help if they want. If they arrive too late in the morning when the dogs crows and eagles etc are up she puts them in a bucket and will wait till the scavengers are resting to release the baby turtles. I have personally witness dogs digging up a hatching nest and Saranga chasing them off to rescue the babies.sometimes she has wait till the evening to let them go, but she know how to look after them and would never do anything to endanger the turtles she loves so much. She is happy for people to watch when they come to lay at night but insists people don't go too close and stops them from using flash cameras and torches to get a better look. I have seen her being very strict over this as she says they will not lay if they get too disturbed. The tourist who wrote this review out of ignorance just got it so completely wrong! Oh and I have never see either of them making a single penny out of the turtles which come to lay on their beach. They now get over 20 turtles laying in a season just on their small stretch of beach and it is all down to their careful loving attention.
Nishantha is happy to take people on snorkelling trips (he does of course charge for this) I have never heard anyone coming back from a snorkelling trip with him not having see at least one. He is a trained diver and knows the sea around this coast well. Saranga is an amazing cook and her pretty little resturant in the beach is worth a visit. She has a menu of local dishes she cooks with all fresh local ingredients and is happy to do specials if you request the day before.
The rooms are comfortable and clean and Saranga and Nishantha are lovely helpful hosts on the nicest beach in Polhena. What more can I say.
Such a GREAT place right next to the beach! Owners speak good English, they are lovely, kind and they smile all the time! Food is SO GOOD! I had breakfast and lunch! I asked to make me a boiled egg instead of fried. And they did, they even brought it with a little pot of pepper and salt! Very delicate:)
You can also watch sunset at night from here!
HORRIBLE RESTAURANT.we were passing by this place and the owner asked us if we wanted to see baby turtles. Being curious, as we entered the restaurant, we saw 200 baby turtles he captured on the beach in front of his restaurant. They were trapped in a small plastic bowl and desperately swimming in it. He lied about the fact that he was keeping them for their safety: Later, a bunch of tourists came to see and "help" turtles return to the ocean. So he was obviously making money with the poor baby turtles (according to him, he has been doing this many years).
Apart from this aspect, he charged 4 small langoustines with plain salad/rice for 2500 Rp and a bottle of water for 100 Rp. The food quality was just so poor and having to eat such food with turtles suffering in the background was the most unpleasant experience ever.
I would not support such business ever again.
Highly recommended! Cozy place with everything you need for a perfect beach holiday. Comfy rooms right at the beach, private beach, hide-out corners in the garden, delicious food and heartwarming service of the entire family owning the guesthouse.
Delicious Sri Lankan food! Table full of curries with rice, freshly cooked and served by a super lovely family. It is right at the beach and has great atmosphere.
Although we did not stay here, we had some food on a couple of occasions. The food was superb. The best Srilankan food ever. Cooked with passion by Saranga and served whole heartedly by Nishanta. Not to mention the most reasonable pricing in all of Srilanka. Keep up the good work.
The restaurant is amazing. The people working there are all incredibly nice and funny. They are always ready to joke, and give you amazing food. The fish and the local food is delicious. View to the beach are amazing and if you’re lucky you might see turtles.
