A wonderful setting and worth a quick visit. You will almost certainly need a guide as there is very limited information regarding the carvings. In the grand scheme of historical sites, this is definitely worth the small detour, very impressive.

Very nice historical place with beautiful stone Buddha.
The ticket counter is at the beginning of the street and somewhat inconspicuous.

On the right side of the figures you can observe and photograph the Ceylon Gray Toco

A Nice and amazing historical place to visit. I don't now the story behind this amazing carved statue but the place itself is really beautiful. The place is quiet and you can also relax on a rock with a little pool of water. Out of respect, the woman have to cover their shoulders with a shawl if the shoulder is naked. Also if you want to visit the statue from a close distance you have to remove your shoes. Also out of respect. If you look very closely you see on one of the right statues has 6 fingers instead of 5.
I am a tourist driver and I often take tourists to visit the place and guide the tourists

It is believed to be a temple built during the reign of Varagamba. The statues of Bosats mentioned in Mahayana Buddhism are found here. Idols have been raised from the stone. It is truly an amazing creation. Even though there were signs that a step had been built for the protection of the idols in the early days. It is a very sad fact that the attention of the present authorities has not been focused on it. It is a very quiet and beautiful environment. It is very advisable to visit these places during the day, because in the evening, wild elephants roam around here. There are very precious scenes for photographers to take pictures. There are sanitary facilities. There is a small shop to get snacks and drinks.

A nice and serene place of religious and archaeological significance. The Buddhist and Bodhisatwa statues have been carved out of a solid rock and had been plastered and painted. Now the plaster layer has been weathered except for a few places. Initially a roof must have been there as we can still see the square holes on top.of the statue which must have been used to keep the wooden beams.

Peaceful. Awe inspiring. Hard to get to without your own transportation. Place can be quiet and meditative. Not too many steps to get there unlike Dambulla or Sirigaya.

Don't miss this place. It is so peaceful with so many birds chirping. We were lucky to spot the giant squirrel (Srilanka National animal). You can spend some time near the lake on the way. It can be a mini bird watching camp. We spotted a kingfisher, pelicans, peacocks and many more birds of different colors and making different sounds. Amazing. Also saw a Komodo dragon.

It's just a Wonder of the World! Incredible! Creator and progenitors of mankind
These incredible images have been preserved even in Egypt, Petra and other places where you can’t push through among tourists. And here you can just be.in complete solitude alone with nature, sounds, energy and not rush anywhere.
This is a mystical, unique and sacred place beyond all religions. I wish everyone to have the opportunity to be in this place and in this state.

Entering this heritage site makes you feel you have landed in a Sri Lankan Zen garden. The walkway to the statue is truly a nice walk that makes one imagine what a mess the modern world is truly in. The carvings add that mysterious charm to the whole place.

A must see ancient Buddhist monastery situated in Wellawaya Area. Just 10km from the town center of Wellawaya. You can go by a vehicle or by bus in Wellawaya - Thanamalvila main road. The carvings are situated inside the Raja Maha Viharaya and you should wear a decent dress just like visiting other temples in the country. It is 5km from the main road and there's very beautiful scenery with lakes and wildlife. Very calm and beautiful place and the cleanliness is very good.

The tallest 16m rock-cut 7 buddha statues dating back to the tenth century, retaining traces of orange paint on the robe

This place is a kind of blessing to me. After visiting here I felt the peacefulness of this great place. Wanted to stay few more hours and meditate. I was desperate to see the serenity of the Buddha statue, even though it was made of stone. There is no need for further evidence that the stonemason who carved this statue carved it with great restraint and meditation.

A religious site that is surrounded by greenery. The road is a bit run down but the drive up to it is really pretty.
The rock is said to have emitted an oil about 20 years ago but is dried off now. Lovely carvings and you can just sit in and enjoy the surroundings

Standing at 50 ft, the largest standing Buddha statue in Sri Lanka is hewn out of a single piece of rock at Buduruwagala Temple, just off the road between Beragala and Welawaya hills.

Along with the 50ft Buddha, the complex consists of six smaller statues, with three to each side of the main statue. Among the figures carved into the rock face is thought to be the Buddhist mythological figure of Bodhisattava Avalokitesvara, as well as a female figure in the thrice-bent posture, who is thought to be the Bodhisattava’s consort, Tara.

The figures date back to between the 7th and 10th centuries, but no comprehensive historical details are known. In addition to the human figures, a carved shape of around 3fts width is present in the shape of a flame, and for reasons which cannot yet be explained, mustard oil is always found to be exuding from the rock here.

The statues are very picturesque, situated in an area of dry forest. Although visiting the statues themselves needn’t take too long, the general area in which the temple is located is spectacularly scenic with many tanks and birdlife, making it a really nice trip if en route between the south coast and the uva hills, or even as a day trip from the hills. This cravings can be similarly tied in with the standing Buddha at Maligawila and Bodhisathva Statue.
Mystery beautiful calming place don't destroy this hidden beauty like people done for other places.
