This is one of ancient Buddhist temples.in northern area. The people arround this temple severely suffeed during war, because dirty terrorists continuously attacked them. However, this temple was rebuilt after the war. A must visit place.

"Kurujna Pasaka" or today's "Kurundi Temple" built by King Khallatanaga (100-103 AD), the son of King Saddhatissa, is another Buddhist heritage of historical and spiritual value belonging to the long history of Sri Lanka.

Kurundi Rajamaha Vihara, this place is known as 'Kurundaka' and 'Kurunda' in inscriptions and chronicles. King Khallatanaga (AD 100 - 103) built this temple called 'Kurujna Pasaka', (33 AD Chapter 32 text), King Agbo I (AD 571 - 604) repaired the Karunda temple. It is also said that a lake was made by the name of Kurunda Vapi. The Kurundi Atattakata was compiled at this place. It is said in legend that Buddha visited this place during his second visit to Lanka. It is mentioned in the 1905 archaeological report that there was an inscription in this monastery premises. This area is also known as 'Kurundagama'.

The Kurundi Rajamaha Viharaya, This place is known by the names 'Kurundaka' and 'Kurunda' mentioned in the inscriptions and chronicles. It is said that King Kallatanaga (100 - 103 CE) built this temple called 'Kurugna Pasaka', (M. V, 33 Ch. 32 text), King Agbo I (571 - 604 CE) repaired Karunda Vihara and built a lake named Kurunda Vapi. The Kurundi Atatthakatha was compiled at this place. Legend has it that Lord Buddha visited this place during second visit to Lanka. It is mentioned in the 1905 Archaeological Control Report that there was an inscription in this monastery premises (ASCAR, 1905). It was commissioned by King Mihindu III. This area is also known as 'Kurungama'.

The temple is first mentioned in the 33rd chapter of the Mahavamsa (5th century Pali chronicle). It says that King Khallatanga (110-104 BC) built the Kurunda pasaka temple. It is recorded that the Hela Atuwa called Kurundatta Kathawa was named after the monastery as it was composed at this place. King Khallatanaga built this monastery during the 2nd century BC and the monastery is mentioned as the Kurundawashoka and Kurundakapasaka monastery in the 5th century Pali chronicle, Mahavamsa.

This Buddhist temple is located in Mulativu district, northern province in Sri Lanka. Ruins of an ancient Buddhist temple which was founded by king Kallatanaga (110-103 BC). Kurundi Atthakatha was composed at this Buddhist temple. This is the only stupa constructed using KABOK stone in Sri Lanka.

Very sacred and ancient archaeologocal site built by king Ballatanaga 21 centuries ago and later restored by many kings thereafter, Kurundhi Viharaya is a valuable heritage site which belongs not only to Sri Lanka but to the entire world.

Kurundi (Kurundawashoka Vihara) is an antient Buddhist monestary situated in Mulativu which has a history of 2000 years. This has been built during the reign of King Khallata naga of Anuradhapura era. This place has a Buddhist stupa, some inscriptions and other antient ruins of temple buildings. A place you must visit.
