Handunkanda Eco Adventure Resort

It's about a 2 to 3 hour drive from Colombo depending on how you drive and which route you take. You need to have a car with a high ground clearance to reach there or else the bottom might knock. If you have a vehicle with a body kit, there is a place to park it 1km before the hotel in a safe garden and the hotel will provide a truck to pick you up. But motorbikes and trishaws go on the road with no issue so it all depends on your driving skills as the road is a bit narrow with steep uphill climbs.
Best is to rely on maps where the directions were 100% accurate right to the entrance of the hotel.
The hotel has a car park with a shade due to trees all around. They have a swimming pool which is formed out of natural rock with natural water flowing from the top of the mountain. Great to swim and relax in it.water is very cold and fresh.much healthier than swimming in a chlorine filled swimming pool.
There are plenty of nature tracks to explore / walk on but if you are walking off the main path, you might get bitten by leeches. Luckily the hotel and the garden area within the hotel does not have any leeches.
If you are a nature lover, then you will love this place as there are a lot of birds, butterflies, lizards and insects in this area and near the hotel along the walking paths.

Another thing that I loved about this place was that there was no Dialog phone signals in the hotel area so I was able to relax without the distraction of social media or people calling me.

If you are looking for healthy, local / village food, this is the best place to visit. They serve local curries which none of the lunch packet shops offer. Also, what's unique here is that when they serve food, the portions are large and they don't serve the same food twice. For example, you are 100% guaranteed that the curries you ate for lunch today won't be served tonight or for lunch tomorrow as the menu is totally different giving you a variety. Another thing I love about this place is that for tea time they make some food (ie peni pol pancakes) and serve along with the tea free of charge and the portions are big too so you can eat all you want.

Each room has a ceiling fan but you won't need it in the night because it gets very cold in the night. Luckily the bathroom has hot water because the water coming direct from the top of the mountain to your bathroom is icy cold.
The staff are very friendly and helpful too and will go out of their way to ensure that you have a happy and memorable stay. I guess the total staff count including the chef was around 3 or 4 people. Usually, when I visit most hotels, I can't wait till I get back home but this was one of the very few places which I felt so sad and miserable to leave once we checked out. This is one hotel that I will definitely visit again for sure.

Visited here with friends for one day plan. From Ayagama town to this place there about 5km. Once you reach the Handunkanda call them and inform, they will come and pick you. Dont try to go up with your own vehicle unless you have 4WD.

The place clam and relaxing. We enjoyed the stay here. There are safe forest area here. They do OBD training too. They have highly trained staff instructor for this and he is an ex militant.

They got badminton court, natural pool and more. We enjoyed the stay here and reasonable for the money spent.

They prepared the food in less verity. You can talk to them and ask them to cook based on your preference.

A great place to spend a weekend with the kids. A natural environment on a wooded mountain. A large swimming pool with flowing water provides an invigorating bath which the kids loved. Meals are Sri lankan and tasty. Kumara the caretaker makes your stay comfortable. We were there at the end of May. It was a memorable experience.
