Kumana National Park reviews
44One of the best National Park in Sri Lanka. You can get a wonderful experience with Bird watching, wild elephant, wild boar, Sri Lankan axis deer and lot more.you can capture amazing sceneries in your journey. Hv fun.
Best for bird watching during migrating season. You will frequently spot other wild animals.as well. This park is less crowded compared to yala. If you visit this place try to enter as early as possible in the morning. Towards noon you have very less chance to see animals. Until panama you can travel by a car with low ground clearance. But from panama to kumana road is bit difficult for a car. No need 4×4 until kumana gate. Inside the park you may need to use your own off road vehicle or a safari jeep. There are few safari jeeps available. For one tour they will charge Rs 8000-10000 rupees depending on time you spend. Park entrance fee is less than 100 rupees per adult. (2021)
Not only Sri Lankan animals but also birds from different parts of the world can be seen here.
The national park visited for the first time in my life
Kumana National Park provides excellent feeding and resting habitats for a large number of threatened wetland species, including three turtle species such as the Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas), Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta caretta), and the Olive Ridley Turtle (Lepidochelys olivaceae).
Among other threatened species of reptiles are the globally vulnerable Mugger Crocodile (Crocodylus palustris). The most sighted reptiles at Kumana National Park are Mugger Crocodile, the Indian Flap-shelled Turtle, and the Indian Black Turtle.
Birdlife at Kumana National Park:
Sri Lanka records more than 430 bird species comprising endemic, resident and migrant birds. Of these, the bird watchers are able to watch over 200 species easily. The wide variety of birds found in the numerous wildlife parks of Sri Lanka makes the tropical island a prime bird watching destination in the world. The Kumana National Park is the most important and most popular bird sanctuary in Sri Lanka. Kumana birdlife supported by Some 20 lagoons and tank is an ornithologist’s paradise. During April–July, tens of thousands of birds migrate to the Kumana swamp area annually nearly 255 species of birds have been recorded in the National Park. Regular sightings of birds include pelicans, painted storks, spoonbills, white ibis, herons, egrets and hundreds of little cormorants. The very rare black-necked stork has also been spotted at the swamp.
Kumana National Park is a very nice park where you could enjoy nature and wildlife. Good place for photography.
Kumana National Park is one of the good national parks in Sri Lanka. Here, you can see large flocks of migratory waterfowl and wading birds. The park is 391 kilometres southeast of Colombo, and it need a day to travel from Colombo. This park is contiguous with Yala National Park which is great spot to see wildcats. Kumana was formerly known as Yala East National Park.
We visited the park one week ago, and I can tell you that it was great. We are luckly enough to take our road, and we travel through the park along with our friendly ranger. The animals were so cute and amazing.
Kumana National Park is one of the most beautiful national park in Sri Lanka. It is popular for birds, but you will see other animals such as elephants, leopards, wild bears etc.as well. Through Department of Wildlife Conservation, you can reserve campsites inside the park and stay over a night. Best time of the year to visit is after the monsoon season. It is always advisable to enter the park as early as possible in the morning to witness animals starting the day off.
One of my favorite parks in the island. I used to love camping here, in the beds of kumbukkan oya. My favorite Campsite was Ada Kumbukka named after a large bent kumbuk tree in the river bed, I can assure that this place will blow anyone’s mind once they get to see the tranquility and the beauty of this site.

One of the best Safari I had been. I had scene so many birds, big crocodiles and the beautiful nature.
This is the entrance to Kumana national park.
You have to drive 35KMs to the south from Pottuvil. The entrance is located near Okanda Beach and kovil.
You can go inside this entrance and get a a safari Jeep along with a guide.
There is also safari keeps available at Arugam Bay. But taking a Jeep from there is not advisable since you might be overcharged due the increase of distance.
The best way is to come inside the park by your own vehicle and then rent a safari Jeep.
Vehicles are starting from Rs. 8000 and will changed by your requirements.
You have to go there in the early morning as possible.
Since this sanctuary is well known for its variety of birds, you might needs a powerful binocular or an camera to see the true beauty. There are lots of birds who can only be seen here but nowhere else in the world.
There are also leopards, elephants, deers, crocodiles which can be abundantly seen it this park.
It will take you around 6 hours for a satisfying Safari ride.
After the Safari ride, you can either go to Okanda or Panama to have a good sea bath. You can even camp at Panama

Famous for the birds. But lots of other wild animals can be seen here. Not busy like other national parks Iike Yala or Udawalawa. Cost for the safari vehicles little bit expensive due to less demand.

Best place to visit to see birds and animals, go early in the morning to see them, why not couple the tour with Yala tour
Kumana National Park in Sri Lanka is renowned for its avifauna, particularly its large flocks of migratory waterfowl and wading birds. The park is 391 kilometres (243 mi) southeast of Colombo on Sri Lanka's southeastern coast. [1] Kumana is contiguous with Yala National Park. [2] Kumana was formerly known as Yala East National Park, but changed to its present name on 5 September 2006. [3]
The park was closed from 1985 to March 2003 because of the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam) attacks. It was also affected by the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004. [4]
Kumbukkan Oya forms the southern boundary of the national park. [2] Some 20 lagoons and tanks support the extensive birdlife of the national park. [5] The lagoons are shallow with depths less than 2 metres (6.6 ft). Kumana villu is subject to occasional inundation with seawater. The elevation of the area ranges from sea level to 90 metres (300 ft). The mean annual temperature is 27.30 °C (81.14 °F) and the area receives 1,300 millimetres (51.18 in) of annual rainfall.
One of the best safari trip i had. It wasn't busy as yala. Experience might affected by season, weather conditions etc. Overall experience was amazing for 2 days
