Old Kallady Bridge,Batticaloa, பழைய கல்லடி பாலம் , மட்டக்களப்பு reviews
3Kallady Bridge in Batticaloa lies across the path where Batticaloa Lagoon joins the Indian Ocean. The old Kallady Bridge, which is only utilized by pedestrians and cyclists, gives eye-catching views. The best views can be seen in the evening. If you are traveling across Batticaloa, this is a good place to enjoy nature.
Kallady Bridge was built in 1924 during British colonial rule. The bridge was named Lady Manning Bridge in honour of the wife of William Manning, the British Governor of Ceylon.
It was the oldest and longest iron bridge in Sri Lanka. On average 10,000 vehicles crossed the narrow, single lane bridge daily before construction of new separate bridge. Accidents on the bridge would lead to traffic problems in the area at that time.
Batticaloa's singing fish legend is associated with the bridge. In 1954 two American priests from St. Michael's College, Batticaloa, Rev. Fr. Lang and Rev. Fr. Moran, recorded fishes singing under the bridge. The recording was broadcast on Radio Ceylon in the 1960s.
Constructed by the British in early 20th century, the old Kallady Bridge stands as one of the iconic landmarks in Batticaloa. For some time, it was the longest bridge in Sri Lanka (before the Muttur bridge was constructed). The new bridge lies parallel to the older one. Only cyclists and pedestrians use the old bridge at present.
