Fort Hammenhiel is an small island in Karainagar. In past time, it was a prison and now we can see the old memories there. You can see the around in very clear manner. All kind of maintenance is doing by the Sri Lanka NAVY.

Situated on an islet just offshore and reachable by boat from the resort located and operated by the Army.
Youll have to get a pass at control gate but just say you visiting the fort.
The resort has a restaurant and besides exploring the fort, it all about taking in the views. The fort is a perfect destination if you rent bicycles in Jaffna and are able/ want a full day ride

The hotel is located on an island. This is a former fort also used as a prison by the government in times past. Great location to stay in Jaffna.

Fort Hammeniel was named after a Dutch commander who tho thought we were the shape of a slice of Ham. How dumb were the Dutch?

Probably impossible for the individual traveller. I visited with Dutch travel agent Djoser. This tiny fort is well-preserved and in a unique location. Take the chance to visit if you get it.

A nice place with lovely view
The time consumption for the preparation of the food is pretty high
Sea food tastes better it seams

An ancient prison converted to a hotel and maintained by Sri Lanka Navy. Go there and experience the surprising welcome. You can see sun rise and sun set at the same place. Also navy boat will take you to the rooms.

Excellent place and it would be a total new experience unless you were not jailed there before;)

Nice food to enjoy. I would like to recommend this place for foreigners. Cost is very low when comparing to other places in suburbs

This is now a hotel run by the Sri Lanka navy. You reach it only by boat. The building has an interesting history as a military establishment a home and a prison in the past. Unfortunately it is not marketed widely as a hotel you could book.

Fort Hammenheil was constructed by Portuguese during 17th century. When Dutch invaded Sri Lanka, they captured this fort in year 1658. They named it as Hammenhiel, which comes from Hammen-hiel (heel of the ham). Some reconstruction of the fort was done by them in year 1680. In the recent history, this fort is used as place to detain prisoners.

Best location in the island of Karainagar connected to the mainland Jaffna by a picturesque causeway. Sunset and moon rise here are phenomenal. The tiny resort in the island Fort is a fully refurbished prison managed by Sri Lanka Navy. Prior to that it was a Dutch fortress providing a supportive role to the Forts in Mannar and Jaffna. One can stay in one of the luxury rooms or in a prisoner's room just like a prisoner. Luxury rooms have all the amenities needed to keep you in for a few days. Sunrise and sunset give memorable experience in the island. There's a sundeck to watch sunrise and sunset beside the rooms. The occupants have to take a short boat ride to have the meals at the enchanting restaurant located in the mainland right opposite the island. One can do bird watching in the island itself which is frequented by birds of prey in the sky, a colony of resident pigeons, swallows, bee eaters, terns and sea gulls etc especially in the morning and evening. There are a few vantage points allowing landscape photography of the surroundings, too. One can watch schools of colourful fish swimming in the shallow sea around the island as well. It's a piece of heaven on earth!
