Dutch Fort Mannar

As you enter the Mannar island, you can see the fort to your right side. You can visit the fort. It's a fort built by the Portuguese, renovated by the dutch when they invaded. The fort is not maintained well enough to attract tourists. However, it's still a place of visit if you happen to visit the Mannar island.

Mannar fort is located in the entrance of the Mannar, it was one of the archeological sites. They can maintain the premises well and more attractive.

Just a small Dutch fort, still under construction) You need 15 minutes to walk around, there is nothing much to see. The admission is free

මන්නාරම් බලකොටුව - Mannara Fort
1560 දී මන්නාරමේ මෙම උපායමාර්ගික ස්ථානයේ පළමු බලකොටුවක් ඉදිකරන ලද්දේ පෘතුගීසීන් විසිනි. එය දිවයිනේ බටහිර කෙළවරට ආසන්නව, ප්‍රධාන ගොඩබිමට මුහුණලා පටු සමුද්‍ර සන්ධිය ආරක්ෂා කරමින් පිහිටා ඇත. මන්නාරම කොටුව ලන්දේසීන්ට යටත් වූයේ 1658 පෙබරවාරි 22 වන දින කොළඹ කොටුව වැටීමෙන් වසර දෙකකට පසුවය. 1996 දී ලන්දේසීන් බලකොටුව නැවත ගොඩනඟා වර්තමාන ප්‍රමාණයට විශාල කළහ.

දිය අගලකින් වට වූ මන්නාරම් කොටුවේ හතර කොනේ බලකොටු හතරක් ඇත. වර්තමානයේ බලකොටු නොවෙනස්ව පවතින අතර බලකොටුව තුළ ඇති අනෙකුත් ගොඩනැගිලි නිසි ලෙස නඩත්තු කර නොමැත. නමුත් ලන්දේසි ලාංඡනවල නටබුන් සහ සොහොන් සෙල් ලිපි තවමත් දක්නට ලැබේ. මන්නාරම බලකොටුව දැනට ශ්‍රී ලංකා ආරක්‍ෂක හමුදාවේ කඳවුරකි.

ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ "මුවර්ස්" යනුවෙන් හඳුන්වනු ලබන දහස් ගණන් මුස්ලිම්වරුන් 1990 දී එල්ටීටීඊය විසින් පලවා හරින ලදී, ඔවුන් මන්නාරමේ ස්වදේශික වැසියන් සහ දෙමළ භාෂාව කතා කරන අය වුවද. කැරලිකරුවන්ගේ පාලන ප්‍රදේශයේ අනෙකුත් සියලුම ප්‍රදේශවල මුස්ලිම් හා බෞද්ධ සුළු ජාතීන්ට ද එම ඉරණම අත් විය. එල්. ටී. ටී. ඊ පාලනය අවසන් වීමෙන් පසු, විශේෂයෙන්ම සිවිල් යුද්ධය අවසන් වීමෙන් පසු, බොහෝ මුස්ලිම් පවුල් මන්නාරම දූපතේ සිය නිවෙස් වෙත ආපසු ගිය අතර දැන් නැවතත් මුස්ලිම් ප්‍රජාව ජනගහනයෙන් විශාල කොටසක් ඇත.

போர்த்துகீசியர்களின் எதிர்ப்பிற்குப் பிறகு 1658 இல் டச்சுக்காரர்களால் கோட்டை கைப்பற்றப்பட்டது, ஆனால் கோட்டையை வலுப்படுத்தியது தவிர, கோட்டையில் குறிப்பிடத்தக்க மாற்றம் எதுவும் செய்யப்படவில்லை.

மன்னார் கோட்டையில் நான்கு கோட்டைகள் உள்ளன, கோட்டையின் உள்ளே உள்ள கட்டிடங்கள் சரியாக பராமரிக்கப்படவில்லை என்றாலும் அது இன்னும் நல்ல நிலையில் உள்ளது.  எந்த தடையுமின்றி கோட்டையை சுற்றி வரலாம்.  கோட்டைக்குள் நுழைந்ததும் இடதுபுறத்தில் கோட்டையின் உச்சிக்கு அணுகல் உள்ளது.  இங்கிருந்து நீங்கள் கோட்டையைச் சுற்றி நடக்கலாம், உள்ளே உள்ள இடிந்த கட்டிடங்களின் பறவைக் காட்சியைப் பெறலாம்.

கட்டிடத்தின் இரண்டு முனைகளிலும் கதவு அல்லது ஜன்னல்கள் இல்லாத இரண்டு அறைகளைக் காண்பீர்கள்.  பெரிய இரும்பு கம்பிகளில் தற்போது உடைந்த பலகையால் மேற்பகுதி மூடப்பட்டுள்ளது.  இந்த அறைகளுக்கான ஒரே அணுகல் சுவரின் ஒரு பக்கத்தில் பொருத்தப்பட்ட சில சிறிய எஃகு படிகள் மட்டுமே.  இந்த இரண்டு அறைகளும் ஒரு காலத்தில் சிறை அறைகளாக இருந்திருக்கலாம்.

கூடுதலாக, கட்டிடங்களுக்கு இடையில் ஒரு தேவாலயம் போல் இருப்பதை நீங்கள் காணலாம்.  இரண்டு கண்காணிப்பு கோபுரங்கள் இன்னும் 2 விளிம்புகளில் உயரமாக நிற்கின்றன.  ஒன்று கோட்டையிலிருந்து உடைந்து விரைவில் கடலில் விழும்.

It's a small historic fort. Dutch being one of the first Europeans (after Portuguese) to hit the island and set base and took control of the whole island, except the Kingdom of Kandy. The fort is right at the edge if the now long bridge connecting main island to Mannar. Is currently under restoration, but again abandoned with the covid scene and also current economic situation.

It is located in Mannar Island, Sri Lanka next to the new bridge that connects the mainland with Mannar Island. It was built by Portuguese in 1560. Dutch came to this fort in 1658 and they rebuilt it in 1696. In 1795 British occupied the fort.

It is a square shaped fort with four bastions. The fort is currently occupied by Department of Archeology. Nowadays it is renovated by Department of Archeology.

There is a rampart is on the left after entering the fort. From here you can walk around the fort. There are no restrictions to entering the fort.

A historical place to visit. You must stay there for at least one hour to see what is inside the Fort.

Mannar Fort is located on Mannar Island, Sri Lanka. It was built by Portuguese in 1560. The fort fell to the Dutch in 1658, and they rebuilt the fort in 1696. In 1795 the British occupied the fort following the surrender by the Dutch.

It is a square-shaped fort with four bastions and is located next to the new bridge that connects the mainland with the Mannar Island.

On the southern tip of Mannar Island, just outside of its main town, Mannar Fort offers stunning views over the ocean between itself and the mainland of Sri Lanka. The square-shaped fort was built in the mid-16th century by the Portuguese, but it was captured by the Dutch in 1658. The Dutch made no changes to the building once it was in their possession other than to reinforce it from further attacks. In 1795, the Dutch surrendered to the British, and the fort was subsequently occupied by British forces.
The fort bastions reach a height of around 3.5 meters, with thick walls that measure approximately 1.5 meters, and ramparts that stretch for a length of approximately 14.5 meters each. The fort turned a tidy profit from the practice of pearl fishery within its waters, but the depletion of the area’s pearl oysters led to a decline of the structure’s old grandeur. It is currently occupied by Sri Lanka’s Department of Archeology. The remains of what looks to be a church can be found within the fort’s walls, as well as two watchtowers that stand at its corners.

Mannar Fort is not as large as some of the other Portugese Forts in Sri Lanka. It is situated very close to the Mannar town, hence easily accessible. You don't need to purchase any tickets to visit, hence freely accessible. Best time to visit is either early in the morning or the late evening.

Preservation works are underway. It's a reminder of the past history and one one the early forts in the Northern parts of Sri Lanka.

Very historical places.not much attention there but people who got an interest about the history need to visit.
