Pabalu Vehera (Temple of Marbles) - 52

Pabalu Vehera is a medieval monastery located in Polonnaruwa. It has been identified as the Rūpavathi Chéthiya built by a queen of King Parakramabahu I.

The name Pabalu Vehera derives from the large number of beads (pabalu in Sinhala) that were recovered from this site.

A stupa in the ancient city. Not many people visit the place as it is slightly off the main route.

It's very calm site to visit while you are in historical capital of Polonnaruwa. Not only to take nice piture of this Ruined Dagaba. Baut also spend some time meditating

The original name of this vehera is unknown. The present name “pabalu” (meaning “beads”) is made from the discovery of a large number of small glass beads while excavating the area around the stupa. From the outside we can see that this rather impressive building resembles a stupa on a second stupa. The vehera usually has only 4 images. But there are nine image houses around the vehera. Some of them still preserve Buddha images. Among these are statues, standing and sitting, and several statues in between. One has the Sri Pathla (foot impression) of the Buddha. Another is a Buddha statue. It is believed that these idols were built by different people at different times. In addition there is a staircase to reach the first level of the stupa. The upper part of the stupa has been destroyed by the invaders and the center of the vehera has been destroyed by the treasure hunters in the recent past. It is our responsibility to preserve the endangered Buddhist heritage.

පරාක්‍රමබාහු රජුගේ අගමෙහෙසියක වූ රූපවතී බිසව විසින් කරවන්නට ඇති බව සැලකෙන මෙය දෙමහල් ස්තූපයකි. පේසා වලට නැගීමට කළ පියගැට පෙළ හා කොරවක්ගල් ද මෙහි දැකිය හැක.
මළුව වටා ගල් අල්ලා සකස් කර ඇති අතර දාගැබ වටා පිළිම ගෙවල් හා මලසුන් ගෙවල් දිස්වේ.

දළදා මලුව පසුකොට ප්‍රධාන පාර දිගේ මඳ දුරක් ගොස් දකුණට හැරි ගියවිට පබළු වෙහෙරට ලඟාවිය හැකිය. පොළොන්නරුවේ විශාල දාගැබ් තුනෙන් එකක් වන මෙහි පැරණි නම කුමක්දැයි නිශ්චිත අදහසක් නැත. මේ භූමියෙන් පබළු හමුවීම නිසා මෙයට පබළු වෙහෙර යයි ව්‍යවහාර කරන බව පෙනේ. චුල වංශයේ පරාක්‍රමබාහු රජුගේ බිසවක්වූ රුපවති දේවිය විසින් නගරය මැද රන්මුවා නැවක් බඳු රන්මුවා මහා සෑයක් ඉදි කරවූ බව සඳහන් වෙයි. එය ගඩොලින් කළ කොට වෙහෙර වර්ගයේ මේ විශාල ස්ථූපයයි. මේ දාගැබ පද්මාකාර දාගැබකි. මේ ස්ථූපය ආරාම සංකීර්ණයක අංගයක් ලෙස නිර්මාණය කරන ලද්දක් නොවේ. ස්ථූපයේ දකුණු දෙසින් පේසා වලට නැගීමට පඩි පෙළක් නිමවා තිබීම විශේෂ ලක්ෂණයකි. දාගැබ වටා ශෛලමය හිටි පිළිම, හිඳී පිළිම, සැතපෙන පිළිම ආදී පිළිම හා මල් ආසන වලින් යුතු පිළිම ගෙවල් දහයක් පමණ ඉදිකොට තිබී ඇත.

This Buddhist stupa was off the road to the Shiva temple. It is fairly small but has some good statuary around it. It is also well mowed and maybe a 15-20 minute stop. I spent a little while longer as I happened upon a big green snake in the grass. I kept a good distance but was surprised to see this 4-5 foot snake.

It is believed to been built by one of the king Parakramabahu’s (1153-1186 AD) consorts, queen Rupawathi. Situated inside Polonnaruwa's main archaeological site.
