Kantale Tank reviews
19 Trincomalee District in eastern Sri Lanka. The town is located 38 km (24 mi) south-west of Trincomalee.
According to the ancient chronicle, Mahavamsa, Kantale Tank, also named "Gangathala Vapi", is credited as being built by Aggabodhi the II (606–618) [4] and rehabilitated and developed by Parakramabahu the Great (1153–1186). [5] 3,750 hectares. Constructed for the irrigation of crops in this arid region, its source of water is the Mahaweli River, the longest in the island, which flows out to the sea at Trincomalee.
One of the oldest tanks in Sri Lanka, the Kantale Tank gives water to a vast area for paddy and sugar cane plantations as well as for human consumption in Trincomalee and the adjoining areas.
Fabulous to see the place staying on bund with water on my right and a hill view on left.
Such a wonderful place was underrated so far.
Not to miss place in Your bucket list
A huge irrigation project situated in Trincomalee district's Kanthale. A vast dam has built in this tank about 50 feet of height. A nice place to enjoy the evening with your family.
One of the biggest tank in srilanka which provide water for Drinking and Irrigation purposes. It a good place to spend time with your loved once
Beautiful place with great view.you can travel near 4 minutes to here from the Kanthale town. But don't swim here without proper guidance.bunt of the tank is the best place to getting photographs.
Beautiful and relaxing place to visit. Located in A6 main road. Have road parking area.
Ideal place to watch sunset.
I was here a year ago. This is a historical place in Sri Lanka; both Sinhala and Tamil kings contribute to developing this tank to support agricultural needs. You must visit here to enjoy the nature view with the cool weather in the tropical area of Sri Lanka.
Beautiful Location with amazing sunset views. Below place in the photo is very nice place to play in water and taking bathe. Recommend the sunset and spending some time there by the tank banks zipping a coffee. Water was clear and the bathing are was safe too. Do not harm the beautiful environment of this area as that’s already happening by some of the people it seems like. Worth of going. Loved it.
Such a beautiful place to visit. I really loved it. This is one of the popular spots among visitors where you can have a distant aerial view of Kantale lake. The view of Upper Lake comes to life when the sun geos down and the lake reflects the golden sunlight. The sunsets here are magical and along with the view of the green village makes for a memorable spot. Good place to spend some time with family. No shops nearby.hence water etc needed to be brought from home. Neat place and we need to preserve the nature as such. Few of them leave polythene bags which needs to be avoided.
One of the best scenic view on the way to Trincomalee. This place have many small curd shops where you can enjoy curd & paani along with natural view. Best place to conduct mini natural photo shoot.
This is amazing place. Srilankan agriculture system. Grat tank in our world. World recorded place. This tank can see Colombo trincomalee road near lanthale town. Havy load vehical not accept near tank road. Because it's not good for tank. This tank used for agriculture and drinking water. And also fishing. One side lake and one side paddy feild. Very beautiful photo location in our country. We love it.
Very nice place that you can spend a moment if you are travelling via trincomalee - dambulla highway. A good view of the tank and the other side huge paddy fields. Dont put your plastics and polute this beautiful environment. No near by restaurants.
Kantale Tank is a large scale irrigational tank built by King Aggabodhi in 7th century. It is a good place to relax if you are travelling to Trincomalee from Colombo. There are ample spaces by the road to park vehicles. The nearest town is Kantale, which is situated at a level lower than the tank. In 1986, the dam failed and water swept across the villages close to Kantale, creating a major disaster.
The view of both the tank side and the vally side of the road on the tank bunt are spectacular.
An ancient tank with a huge volume of water that supports the livelihood of nearby villagers.
Beautiful place where you can relax and enjoy the views of the paddy fields in one side and the reservoir on the other side.

A lovely place to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery all around you. An ideal place to go bird watching especially water birds. Large flocks of cormorants and pelicans arrive at the lake to feed and are an awesome site to watch. Mornings and evenings are the best times to go bird watching when it is relatively cooler than mid day. The best spot to watch them is the hotel run by the Sri Lanka Navy. The star class hotel is within easy reach near the Habarana Trincomalee highway. The rooms offer stunning views of the lake.
Very nice place to visit with couples and families and one of the ancient and beautiful place
