National Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu

The Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu is a Roman Catholic Marian shrine in Mannar district of Sri Lanka. With a history of over 400 years, this shrine acts as a center for pilgrimage and worship for Sri Lankan Catholics

Perhaps the holiest of churches in Sri Lanka. Every Catholic would want to visit atleast once in their lifetime.

National Shrine. Holy place to Catholics. If you travel near mannar you must visit this place.

One of the famous christian church its in the clam place, all king of religion. I saw Hindu, Buddhist, Christian people coming here. You can stay here with low host. Its a miracles church, people believe if they come warship here their wishes will happens.

It's a holy place, lot of miracles are happening- I had/ having experience of my prayers are heard

Religious place for chatholics. People from other religions also visit here. Peaceful place to visit. If you travel by bus you have to get the Mannar Madhu bus from Madhu junction. Somewhat crowded in Sundays.

The major Catholic Church in Sri Lanka. People visit this place with so much faith and they believe that miraculous things happens after worshiping at this place. Non Catholics also can visit the place and experience the church and how the Catholics do their prayers. The church is located in dense jungle and survived the civil war which lasted for 3 decades. Now the access roads are very well built.

Its really good place, very calm you can pray, only thing area need to clean and washroom need to clean and maintain

Christianity in Sri Lanka was not known before the 16th century, although some local traditions claim that St. Thomas the Apostle was active on the island. It is known that the Portuguese missionaries of India, especially under the authority of St. Francis Xavier, brought Roman Catholicism to the Kingdom of Jaffna, which comprised the northern peninsula of Sri Lanka. The newly converted Christians were persecuted by both the king of Jaffna and the Dutch. During this time, Catholics regrouped to form a church in Manthai, installing a statue of Our Lady of Good Health in a sanctuary.
With the rebirth of the Catholic faith by missionaries such as St. Joseph Vaz, the praying priests expanded the small sanctuary at the end of the 17th century. With the arrival of the British on the island, the persecution ceased, but the number of Catholics remained small, with only 50,000 members in 1796. Despite such a small community, the sanctuary in Madhu began to attract pilgrims from all over the world.country. The suffocation of the Jesuit authority that had begun in 1773 in the subcontinent led to the suppression of the Society of Jesus in Madhu in 1834. Bishop Bonjean began the construction of the new church in 1872 and his successors built a facade, a spacious presbytery, a quiet chapel of the Blessed Sacrament and a grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes

If you want to experience a miraculous place, this is the place to be. It's a beautiful church in the middle of a dense jungle, survived through a 3 decade war. Must visit religious place in Sri Lanka.

A one of the best place in Sri Lanka for catholics. There we can tami, sinhala and other people we can see that they are worshiping. Best place that i went one a time in every year to worshiping. ️

ශතවර්ෂ ගණනාවක් පුරා ලාංකේය කිතුණු ජීවිතය තුල මඩු වන්දනා ගමන දම්වැලක පුරුක් මෙන්ද, ලෝහයක් කාන්දමක් කරා ඇදී එන්නා සේ ද ගසට පොත්නක් මෙන් බැදී පවතින්නේය.

මඩු වන්දනාව ඇරබීමට පෙර ජනතාව ඉටුකරන්නාවූ සිරිත් විරිත් බොහෝමයක් වේ. ඒ අතුරින් පළමු වැන්න ලෙස තම තමන්ගේ දේවස්ථානය වෙත ගොස් බාරහාර වී ඉටිපහන් දල්වා, අසල්වැසියන් සියලු දෙනා සමග සුහද ශීලිව හා මිත්‍රශිලිව අමනාපකම් මග හැර දමා හොද හිත වර්ධනය කර ගනිමින් වන්දනාවට සරිලන ලෙස පේවෙති. මෙහිදී වැඩිහිටියන් තම දුවාදරුවන්ට ආසිරි පතා ලබා දෙන උපදෙස් අතර කටවරද්ද නොගන්නා ලෙසද ඔවුනට උපදෙස් දෙයි

The Madhu church is considered to be one of the holiest Catholic shrines in Sri Lanka.and is visited by countless masses of both Sinhalese and Tamil devotes throughout the year the festival of the Madhu church is one of the most important date's in the calendar of many across the country.located in MANNAR district middle of the jungle.with the history of nearly 400years.both locals and foreigners visit occasionally.
